Did you know that if you combined the length of all five Great Lakes, it would make up about 44% of the Earth’s circumference? If you emptied the Great Lakes over the United States they would cover the place in more than 9.5 feet of water. And, when we talk Great Lakes, we are not just talking water. They contain more than 32,000 islands, including the largest freshwater island in the world – Manitoulin in Lake Huron. Congress Simultaneously Expands and Guts Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

Great news: on July 22 a bipartisan group of Congress people introduced the Great Lakes Ecological and Economic Protection Act (GLEEPA) which would provide $600 million in funding to federal Great Lakes programs (including the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative).
