Update: DEQ/DNR Recombination Nearing Critical Stage

Bruce Rasher, the man appointed to oversee the transition that will recombine the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) with the Department of Natural Resources, will be issuing a report and recommendations to the Governor before the end of December.

While some encouraging developments have taken place over the last two and a half months, it is clear that there are efforts underway by some special interests to construct a new department with weakened regulatory powers. In addition, some in Lansing view recombination as a magical solution to the budget problems of the DEQ and the DNR.

The environmental community is thankful for the opportunities for input that have been provided throughout this process, however, we need your help to ensure that the new department created is properly funded, and protects and maintains our natural resources in a way that protects our economy and our public health.
