Ann Arbor businessman Rick Snyder has won the endorsement of the Michigan League of Conservation Voters in the Aug. 3 Republican gubernatorial primary.

This is our first-ever endorsement in a Republican governor's race and our first GOP endorsement in the 2010 election cycle.

“Without a doubt, Rick Snyder is the clear choice for any Michigan voter in the Republican primary that cares about the future of our beautiful Great Lakes and valuable natural resources,” said Lisa Wozniak, Michigan LCV's executive director.

“His focus throughout the campaign on the benefits that a green vision brings to Michigan’s economy is a key element in any honest plan for our state’s future. The unfortunate lack of attention to this vital part of Michigan’s recovery by his Republican opponents only further highlights Mr. Snyder’s stand-out presence in this race.”

The decision to support Snyder was reached after an extensive review of his public statements, his participation in the Michigan LCV Education Fund’s Gubernatorial Forum on May 12, and a comprehensive discussion with Michigan LCV’s Board of Directors.

“Being a nonpartisan voice for environmental protection, Michigan LCV focuses on evaluating a candidate’s positions on the issues that matter, not just their party,” Snyder said.
“Their endorsement of my candidacy, and of my commitment to our state’s lakes and resources, further shows that my plan for Michigan’s future truly bridges our polluted partisan divide. I am proud to have the support of the Michigan LCV and look forward to working with them in the future to ensure that Michigan’s beautiful outdoors remain protected.”
Michigan LCV is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization which seeks to turn environmental goals into legislative and community priorities by electing, educating, and holding officials accountable for their votes and actions.
The Board of Directors includes people affiliated with both parties, such as Republican Congressman Joe Schwarz and Grand Rapids attorney Bill Farr. Governor Bill Milliken also is an honorary co-chair.
Today's endorsement announcement comes on the heels of a Compare Your Candidates analysis released by MIchigan LCV, highlighting the environmental stances of Michigan's gubernatorial candidates.
